Jordan Spieth
Texan who understands links golf better than any other current American, knows how to win an Open (did so in 2017) and just a shot out of playoff at St Andrews last time. Perfect warm-up with top-ten at Scottish Open. Lukewarm putter the only worry.

Rory McIlroy
Past winner and Europe’s best chance now he’s back in a good place with suspect putting sorted. Wasted a hot start at St Andrews in 2010 but the weather gods were against him. Not likely to be any wind worries this sun-kissed week

Louis Oosthuizen
Course winners are always to be feared and ‘Shrek’ didn’t just win in 2010, he ran away with it. That remains his only Major but he’s been the bridesmaid more than once and almost won back-to-back St Andrews Opens when just pipped in 2015 playoff.

Xander Schauffele
He’s the hottest golfer on the planet right now, having won on his last three starts. Olympic gold medalist with classic method but shaky now and again under pressure. Just won on a links course and one of four co-runners-up in the 2018 Open at nearby Carnoustie.

Will Zalatoris
Perfect weather for the Americans and this guy is one of the best. Runner-up in three Majors from just eight attempts but suffered an unhappy Open debut last year, lasting only 15 holes before wrenched shoulder forced him to quit. Second time lucky?

Dustin Johnson (reserve)
Like Oosthuizen a fellow defector to the mega-rich LIV Tour, DJ is one winner the R & A is dreading but his golf looked dialed in (for first two rounds anyway) when in Portland. Dual Major champ who is flying under the radar but still a golfing thoroughbred.
